Race attack denial

POLICE have denied any racial motive after a man’s ears were badly damaged as he was dragged along the floor by a taxi following a dispute over a fare.
Police say the 23-year-old victim was in the taxi on Dowry Street, Oldham, shortly before 1am on Saturday.
After arguing with the driver, he got out but was caught in the door and dragged along the floor by the car as it drove off, leaving him with injuries to his face and body.
A 29-year-old man has been arrested and bailed pending further inquiries. The incident is being talked about on far right websites where there are claims that the man had his ears cut off as he was attacked and robbed by Asian men.
Police say there is no evidence of a racial attack.
Det Insp Javid Pervaiz said: “We are treating this as a dispute between a taxi driver and a passenger. There is no evidence of any racial aggravation. Any sort of speculation about racism is both misleading and unhelpful.
“What is important is to stick to the facts. We have made an arrest but we are continuing with our inquiries.”

Police probe taxi terror
Date published: 19 February 2010
A 29-year-old taxi driver has been arrested and bailed after a man was dragged along the road by a mini-cab.
The 23-year-old victim’s main injuries are to both ears but he also suffered cuts and grazes to his body.
A police spokesman said he was likely to be in hospital, believed to be Wythenshawe, for some time.
The incident happened in Dowry Street, Oldham, in the early hours of Saturday in what police say was an argument over the fare.
The victim got out of the car but was caught by a door and dragged along.
The driver has been reported to Oldham Council’s Licensing Department.
A council spokesman said: “Police are investigating this incident and we are liaising with them.”

And now for the full story, from the “far right websites”:
just had a phone call. apparantly a lad who is a good mate of mine got attacked on friday night. he got a taxi home but was drunk. he had just been paid for a job he had done. money kept falling out of his pocket. the taxi driver took him somewhere and with other paki twats robbed him. not only did they rob him, they CUT BOTH HIS EARS OFF and put his pants over his head. he is currently in withinshaw hospital recovering. i think this will deffo spark things around here.
sunlight, he used to work for you – lee buckley.
i went down to the hospital yesterday to visit him. he’s in wythenshaw hospital on the other side of manchester.
the full story is as follows-
a girl who used to live on my estate, and on the same street as the victim, just a few doors down spotted something lying in the middle of the rd at 1.30 in the morning. she told the paki taxi driver to stop, but he replied “i cant stop here as i’m known to the police”. why he should come out with this i will leave to you, our thoughts are he was involved in some way. she pulled the handbrake, and got out of the car with her boyfriend and they went over to look. she realised it was lee (she knows him) and immediately phoned for an ambulance. if she hadn’t done it there and then, the hospital reckon he would of died. it was her actions that saved him.
he had got a taxi from the church pub in hollinwood at about midnight. now he reckons he wanted to go home, but here is the paki taxi drivers version of events (his statement to the police). the taxi driver said he told him to go to oldham town centre ( lee was wearing a tracksuit so he wouldn’t have got in anywhere anyway), but then changed his mind and said go to fitton hill. he then claims that lee told him to fuck off and that he wasn’t getting paid. he then says’s lee went back to the car to pay him and started to argue about the cost of the fare the police reckon they do have a recording of him arguing about the cost of the fare. the paki taxi drivers in oldham do have a habit of driving detours when people are pissed to raise the cost of the fares (which is what we believe actually happened). he then said he drove off and lee must have fallen over to receive the injuries he has sustained. the injuries are consistent with him being dragged up the road by the taxi. yet he was found with his tracksuit bottoms over his head (someone made an attempt to stop the blood flow ! who, we don’t know).
lee’s injuries are, a fractured skull, he has lost part of one ear and had the other ear stitched back on although he is now deaf in this ear. he has bleeding on the brain and about 60 stitches all over his head. he also full of bruises and scrapes all over his face, arms and legs.
the police have arrested the driver and impounded his car (the day after). there is a 50 minute discrepancy on his radio, where he is missing. all lee’s money (250) and mobile phone were also missing. there’s no way he could of spent that amount in 4 hours, and he only had about 8 pints.
Dear Sir,
I am not sure whether you have been made aware of this or not, but I would like to bring to your attention an incident which happened involving a friend last Friday night.
The details are hazy at the moment, as the passenger is still recovering in hospital, but I present a brief summary:
A taxi driver employed by Village Cars on Ashton Road assaulted a passenger, Mr Lee Buckley and stole his money and mobile phone. This took place somewhere between Hollinwood and Mr Buckley’s house in Fitton Hill.
I understand he was left for dead, and had it not been for a member of the public, he would not be alive now.
His injuries include a fractured skull, approximately 60 stitches to his head, numerous bruises and grazes to his torso and limbs, a sizeable chunk of one ear is missing and the other ear had to be surgically re-attached. Additionally, this incident has left him deaf in one ear. Mr Buckley is currently recovering in Wythenshawe Hospital.
The police are aware of this and have arrested the driver and impounded his car, should you wish to check or obtain verification. I am naturally horrified by this, as I’m sure you are. Unfortunately I do not have the name of the driver who committed this horrendous act, but I am sure the police would be more than willing to furnish you with this information.
My query is – will this driver be allowed to keep his taxi-cab licence? I assume that since drivers have to undergo a CRB check to ensure that they are “a safe person to drive members of the public”, that it will be self-evident to anyone that this driver clearly does not fulfill those requirements. How does one go about making a formal complaint?
I thank you for your time, and request that should I have sent this email to the wrong person, that you accept my apologies and be so kind as to forward it to the appropriate person.
Dear Beverley,
Thank you for your e-mail in relation to the serious incident that took place last Friday.
We have received a report from the Greater Manchester Police and we are in the process of looking into what action we can take.
I have passed your e-mail onto the Senior Licensing Officer who is dealing with this matter.
